Part Numbers: A Better Starting Point for a Used-Parts Enquiry

A part number can make a used-parts enquiry more specific, but it should sit alongside the vehicle details and a clear description of what you need. If you are replacing an unfamiliar component, ask your repairer to help identify the reference before contacting a supplier.

Photograph the label as well as the part

Where a label or stamped reference is safely visible, take a clear photograph without removing equipment yourself. Include the whole component in another image so the supplier can see which item the reference belongs to.

Copy the complete reference

Letters, spaces and suffixes can be easy to overlook. Send the photograph with any typed reference, particularly when a character is unclear. Say if you cannot read part of the label rather than filling in a number by guesswork.

Explain what your repairer has identified

Tell the supplier whether the reference came from the existing part, a repair estimate or another source. Include your vehicle make, model, year and variant. If your repairer has specified an acceptable alternative, pass on their exact wording.

Confirm the offered item before purchase

Ask the supplier to confirm the reference and description of the actual item available. Have your repairer assess its suitability before committing. A matching description in an advertisement is a starting point for discussion, not a substitute for checking the replacement.
